Addressing the Checkout Assistant That Made Me Totally Speechless – Kudos to You
It was a weekend morning, and I was in a foul mood, filling up my mother's vehicle. This was a common fuel stop that operates as a grocery store, which often leads of waiting behind people bearing baskets of pricey provisions. This is a dreadful thing to occur when the sole aim is to complete a simple refueling. Awful.
Fourth in line I stood among those waiting. Just one employee working, a young woman. A peculiar quality about her. When the faffer at the front of the queue had completed payment for his Viakal, a baked snack, and a carton of eggs, It seemed to me I heard the cashier wish him an excellent day. Strange. Could be I misunderstood, or perhaps she spoke and was being sarcastic. I pondered if she could even be a comrade in my battle with dithering, sharing my contempt for people who hold up people just getting gas including me.
I moved up, becoming the third customer. The person ahead of our line discharged her fuel-only transaction with notable efficiency. Once more it happened: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” In fact, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. Someone from the US? At this location? Her tone suggested it, and no British person tells people those exact words, or simply a good day. Quite out of place. You don’t get US citizens frequenting this area, least of all holding jobs in fueling spots or elsewhere.
Now I stood second. After an elderly lady dealing with a protracted effort with her basket, her groceries, her purse and her loyalty card. This took an eternity. After she finished, she as well received the wish a wonderful day. Yes, American for sure. I could have confirmed it by making a witty remark to her, to see if she did that thing when they look at you, unsmilingly, and say with absolute sincerity: “That’s really funny.” Yet no idea came of a jest to utter.
Ultimately, I accepted the heartfelt tone – or a performance of it, that equates to identical in effect – as she gazed me right in the eye, to my very core, and bid me to have a great day. My spirits lifted. A positive experience.
