American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, causing terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by climate and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy said he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," he remarked in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to hear their worries firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to secure another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the closure began.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second most extended halt in history.

He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," the official said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as other flights extending north to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice went out at 08:45 in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second most active airfield in the US, could experience difficulties from low staffing in the afternoon.

The FAA advised passengers in the state to consult airlines about revised departure times.

The situation precedes Game 3 of the World Series, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest periods to fly in the United States.

Strain on American aviation helped end a federal closure in 2019. Back then, the halt had entered its fifth week and affected airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It led a number of flight controllers to remain absent on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his first term as president, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
