Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Triggered the Dispute
The clip, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who formerly acted in defense or intelligence capacities.
"As we did, you all took an vow to protect and support this founding document," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse improper directives, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the law or our constitution."
The Former President's Angry Response
The recorded statement reportedly provoke a furious reply from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Answer
Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader released a joint statement censuring the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our nation with exceptional national pride and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the security of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical digital publications and retract his aggressive discourse before he causes harm," the declaration stated.
Lawmakers' Strong Reaction
The officials who participated in the video also released a statement.
"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who value this country and swore an vow to safeguard and support the constitution of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we plan to honor it. No warning, coercion, or call for violence will prevent us from that important obligation."
"What's most telling is that the former president views it subject to penalty by execution for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the ex-president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."
More Partisan Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of public representatives."
He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and without qualification."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in American history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told the press that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the offense of sedition" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and determine all that."
White House Reaction
During a administration briefing on that day, when asked by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative replied: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "We see sitting members of the federal government who worked together to orchestrate a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to defy the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The integrity of our military relies on the hierarchy, and if that structure is compromised, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are essentially encouraging."
