England's Assistant Coach Reveals His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
A decade ago, Barry competed at a lower division club. Today, he is focused on helping Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines commenced with a voluntary role with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his calling.
Metoric Climb
Barry's progression is incredible. Starting with his first major job, he built a name through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams took him to top European clubs, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, it’s full-time, the peak as he describes it.
“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘What's the process, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Passion, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their methods include psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and building a true team. The coach highlights the England collective and dislikes phrases such as "break".
“It's not time off or a break,” Barry says. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”
Ambitious Trainers
He characterizes himself along with the manager as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We seek to command the entire field and that's our focus many of our days on. We must not just to keep up with developments and to lead and set new standards. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“We get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We need to execute an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from thought to data to knowledge to execution.
“To develop a process for effective use during the limited time, it's crucial to employ all the time available from when we started. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds among them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”
Final Qualifiers
The coach is focusing on the last two in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.
“We are both certain that the style of play should represent everything that is good from the top division,” he comments. “The athleticism, the versatility, the physicality, the integrity. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.
“To make it light, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and focus more on action.
“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information now. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”
Drive for Growth
Barry’s hunger for improvement is all-consuming. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried about the presentation, since his group contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations he could find to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton locally, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.
He earned his license with top honors, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, where he studied numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard included convinced and he hired Barry as part of his backroom with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that Chelsea removed most of his staff except Barry.
His replacement at Chelsea took over, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he brought Barry over from Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
