Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The explosion occurred as police and firefighters approached the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and another man who escaped subsequent to the incident was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.

The explosion could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location displayed the structure left as a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the residence was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents triggered the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the blast had occurred on a level above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to reporters, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister united with other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
