We are analyzing video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that depict the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location from which the images originated relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
