Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside His Ego at the Door.
One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it could have seemed vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy demands contributions by the talented midfielder, although it is also on the midfielder to fit into the game plans and team pecking order required with England now that he is back in Tuchel's welcoming fold.
Tuchel wants his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is a matter of channeling it in the right way. Individual quality matters but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a cost when celebrity dominates. Still, a point has been made.
Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after not being selected of the recent team selection. He observed England secure their spot at the tournament without him. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel discuss appreciating the squad's spirit and principles. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in champion style, scoring crucial goals for his club versus Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to creating tension with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has shown him that an international career is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.
“No issue exists with him, and no concern about his personality,” Tuchel stated. “Jude displays a competitive streak. It takes a certain edge to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone need to support him and establish a setting which he can channel that intensity towards opponents and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”
Bellingham dominated much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming meaningless matches against one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted playmaker in need of coaching. Foden has not played for England since spring and has struggled to hit the heights this year but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after his display in Manchester City’s win against the German side this week.
The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a fitness issue. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be too many? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.
It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it hurts the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who has to be central. The coach wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision regarding him for a long time. I think it matches his abilities best.”
Tuchel agreed there are occasions when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly an issue exists, be it his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for his club in a specific system, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
The manager talked about Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and the other scoring goals from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at using Foden as a false 9 versus Serbia or Albania. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to score in an international match against Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in many appearances for England when the pair combined for a score. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other once during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point at some point it falls to the duty of the individuals,” he said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of the player under scrutiny. He may not be guaranteed to start versus the upcoming opponents. The manager wants him onside but he will be watching him closely. Leave the ego outside. It will make a very strong England team into an more effective one.
