UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
